Gross Motor Skills Programs:

Improve Balance, Coordination, Strength, and Endurance

Gross motor skills involve the large muscles of the body and are essential for activities such as walking, running, jumping, and playing sports. Our OTs design individualised programs that focus on improving balance, coordination, strength, and endurance.

We use a variety of exercises and activities, from obstacle courses to ball games, to make therapy engaging and relevant. Our therapists ensure that each activity is suited to the client’s age, interests, and developmental level, providing just the right level of challenge to promote growth and improvement.

Our approach also includes educating families on how to incorporate gross motor skill development into everyday activities and play. This ensures that the skills learned in therapy are reinforced and practiced in a range of environments.

Understanding Gross Motor Skills

Gross motor skills encompass a broad range of movements involving the large muscle groups of the body. These skills are essential for everyday activities such as walking, running, jumping, climbing, and playing sports. They are also foundational for fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and overall physical fitness. Gross motor skills develop progressively from infancy through childhood, influenced by factors such as genetics, environment, opportunities for movement, and individual differences in development.

Identifying and addressing these challenges early is crucial for supporting children’s overall development and maximising their potential for independence and participation in daily activities.

Occupational therapists are skilled professionals who specialise in helping individuals of all ages participate in meaningful activities or “occupations” of daily life. In paediatric occupational therapy, a key focus is on promoting the development of essential skills, including gross motor skills, to support children’s independence and engagement in activities at home, school, and in the community.

Our Occupational Therapists work collaboratively with children, families, caregivers, educators, and other members of the healthcare team to assess, intervene, and support children’s gross motor development. They take a holistic approach, considering the child’s strengths, challenges, interests, and environmental factors that may influence their motor skills.

Our occupational therapists develop individualised treatment plans tailored to each child’s unique needs, goals, and interests. Intervention strategies may include:

At LEAP Centre, we recognise the importance of involving families as partners in their child’s therapy journey. Our occupational therapists collaborate closely with parents, caregivers, and other family members to develop goals, plan interventions, and provide support and education. We empower families with the knowledge and skills they need to promote their child’s gross motor development at home and in the community, fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for growth and learning.

Progress monitoring is an ongoing process in occupational therapy, allowing therapists to track the child’s progress towards their goals and adjust intervention strategies as needed. We use a variety of assessment tools, observation methods, and parent/caregiver feedback to evaluate progress and celebrate achievements along the way. Every milestone, no matter how small, is an opportunity to recognise the child’s efforts and resilience, inspiring continued growth and success.

At LEAP Centre, we are dedicated to helping children overcome challenges and reach their full potential in gross motor development. Through personalised intervention, family-centred care, and a holistic approach, our occupational therapists empower children to thrive in all areas of life. If you have concerns about your child’s gross motor skills or would like to learn more about how occupational therapy can help, we invite you to contact us today. Together, we can create a brighter future for your child, filled with confidence, independence, and endless possibilities.
